BUD, NOT BUDDY is a wonderful story written by Christopher Paul Curtis about a young boy living during The Great Depression and searching for his father after the death of his mother. We currently read the novel MACARONI BOY, also set during The Great Depression, but would like to incorporate more African-American culture into our curriculum. Students would compare both characters, Bud (Bud, Not Buddy) and Mike (Macaroni Boy), and how the boys and their families struggle and grow through The Great Depression.
My students love holding a novel in their hands--especially one with a main character that respresents the culture and racial background of themselves. That is why I am requesting a class set and audio of this novel in hopes that all children's backgrounds in my classroom will be represented as they read and listen to this amazing story.
