  • It is About Literacy and Language!

    Funded Jun 16, 2019

First, I would like to say thank you on behalf on my students and myself. You have put a smile on every student in my classroom with your contributions. My students are enthusiastic 1st graders in an ICT, dual language class. Our school is a title 1 school in a very tight community. Many parents are involved in their children education, but due to their socio-economic status, they struggle to provide for essential school materials to help their children succeed in school.

Many of my students are new to this country and enter school barely knowing few words in their primary language, in some cases none. Having books available in their first language and books that they can relate to, will help them develop their language and literacy skills and develop their love for reading. Having these books will help develop their vocabulary and knowledge, as well.

In my classroom we do independent reading, partner reading, shared reading and guided reading. These books will serve as resources to help my students succeed in all these areas. These resources will help us teach them reading strategies and word attack strategies as well as content, language development and acquisition.

My students focus and interest in reading have improved significantly since the arrival of the books. It feels me with joy when they come to me to tell/show me about how the text relates to them. Once again, I would like to thank each of you for your kind donations.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Julissa Olea

These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy. I read on the carpet to them, they complete work there, and they read independently! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind, language of their choice. I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these. With these books, my students will be able to choose books at their different reading levels and the language of their choice, which will help them continue to enjoy reading and develop literacy skills and language. They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
