The students of this humble farming town are tenacious, gracious, and optimistic. This is a community where poverty is roughly 46% and only 24% of adults have graduated from high school. However, you'd be impressed to see such eagerness to learn and respect for others and self. Many of the students are first or second generation born in the United States. They are glad to be here and open to learn; they want to succeed and make their families proud. Our school is old, with cool wooden floors in most rooms and white boards affixed over the old green chalkboards. It has worn well over the ages and is not pretentious in any way...it makes the students feel welcome and at ease. I have been teaching Language Arts for 17 years at this school and know it is primarily because of the character and core of this community. There is an appreciation offered by the students and a work ethic to match.
