Playing the Roles of the Community
Funded Nov 15, 2018Thank you so much for your donations to help my students gain the access to a newly designed dramatic play center. Many of my students have used the material to express thoughts and ideas and show their different cultures using the food that was granted in this donation project. The new kitchen that was donated by you donors, has been used for children to demonstrate the different ways they cook in their home and cultures. The kitchen accessories (blender, coffee maker, and mixer) have been a great asset to our classroom environment. Overall, the material from this donation have helped my students learn to a new level and explore the dramatic play center differently each day. Thank you from Room 9!!!”

Funded Apr 11, 2018It is with great appreciation that I write this letter to you on behalf of my preschool students. We say thank you in a big way! The material from this project have just begun to impact my students learning in some exciting ways. We began using the Spanish alphabet teaching tubs as soon as they arrived and my children were beyond excited. Over the last three weeks, we have been able to provide hands-on learning experiences for the children based on a new Spanish letter we were focusing on. The material in the alphabet tubs helped children learn new vocabulary words and be able to describe the object, rather than just label a picture. For example, one child described the word "arbol" which means tree in Spanish. She was even able to use the concrete object of the tree to make connections in the Science center and outside during gross motor play.
The magnetic sorting game that was also donated in this project have also helped my students expand vocabulary and also learn a new language. The game provides my students the chance to work in a small group to practice team building skills as one child helped another child learn words in English. For example, one of my English Language Learners played the game with a child who speaks primarily in English. She was able to teach her peer vocabulary words in Spanish because they were able to identify the word by looking at the picture. I have been able to use the material in this kit to support the themes we teach in our curriculum. We just completed the theme, "Our body" and we used the magnetic pictures showing different parts of our body that were labeled in a English and in Spanish. The amazing thing about this set is that the words in Spanish are all written in one color and the words in English are written in another color.
The Spanish alphabet book set that was donated in this project contain real life photographs that come with a sentence that is repetitive throughout each book. The repetition is beginning to help my students learn how to read the phrase on the next page. I am confident that by December, at least 4 of my students will be able to track what the sentences say on each page. I am very excited to this occur.
We are excited to continue using the material throughout the year and find new ways to incorporate the material from this project into our daily activities. We thank you again.”

Funded Feb 13, 2018I would like to send my dearest thanks to all of you who helped make this project funded. I have seen great things happen with my students since we have added the technology into our classroom. Many children do not experience technology in the home and have the opportunity to do so in the classroom. The technology is helping my students learn because some of them are able to express their thoughts and ideas through the many apps we have downloaded. All the students engage in a program on the iPad that is monitored by teachers. It helps show the progress each child has made throughout the last few months. We are able to share this information with parents of children in the room and show how much or how little they have improved in specific areas and specific skills.
My students are very excited about this new piece of technology in our classroom. They are able to freely select which games and programs to engage in on a daily basis. My students work with another peer to engage in the games and are able to learn team building skills, such as: taking turns and working together to solve the problems in the games. I have noticed that some of my students are able to identify many letters and sounds since the use of the iPad has been added to our classroom environment. My students are very excited to use the iPad each day and especially when we add new games that relate to our learning and our themes.
My students are able to make connections to the games with the learning that takes place in the classroom. We use YouTube videos to teach different skills. For example, when we learned about ocean animals, we watched a video of dolphins talking under the water. This was an experience my students would not have had if we didn't have the iPad and the technology to do so.”
