In years past, first and second grade teachers' lesson planning focused on simple skills to prepare students for third grade where the "real" learning began. As we evaluate the status of our nation and its comparison to other areas of the world, educators see a need to refocus our students' learning at a much earlier age. Today's first grade students not only learn skills but also engage in higher order thinking and metacognition to understand why they are learning certain skills, how their perspective or background affects their learning, and how the content and background knowledge will help them achieve their goals. This new way of looking at first grade instruction empowers students to embrace their destiny. It makes education a priority and instills intrinsic motivation to achieve success. The first grade students in my class have exceeded my expectations for this style of classroom conversation. They are eager to dive into the next task and collaborate with others.
