Robots aren't just characters in sci-fi movies anymore - many kids are now learning to code and build robots in school! In my previous job, I got to teach robotics, coding, and 3D design using 3D printers to K-6 elementary school students. Technology already engaging for students, but I've seen how exposure to coding teaches kids problem solving, perseverance, and even something as simple (yet important) as how to follow directions. These robots will help my students in becoming 21st century learners. Wonder Workshop's Dash & Dot robots use visual block-based coding, and that coding knowledge can eventually transfer to many coding languages. The accompanying apps (that are free!) are compatible with many devices, including Chromebooks, which we already use in the classroom. I've tried working with several robot and robotics apps, including Bee-bots and Ozobots. I'd recommend them too, but Dash & Dot are my favorite! Six Dash robots will be a great start to build robotics into our school year. In centers/rotations, I can have a third of my students work with the robots in pairs. In the future, I can see my students teaching younger students how to play with the robot and possibly participating in Wonder Workshop's annual robotics competition!
