I teach at an inner city school in Illinois and my students come from 19 different countries around the world and many from Africa. Several students speak multiple languages. My students seem to have a passion for learning about fellow student's countries. Last summer, I had the opportunity to teach abroad in a small village in the Fiji Islands. I have shared many pictures, lessons and stories throughout the year. They are always so intrigued and inquisitive when we discuss Fiji. My camera can only hold about 4 minutes of video, so I was able to show them a few minutes of various celebrations, ceremonies and the Fijian way-of-life. After showing them the video, they were enraptured with learning more about Fiji. We eventually had a traditional Fijian ceremony in our class after they saw this on video. This summer, I have the opportunity to teach in a Maasai village in northern Tanzania, Africa. I am very excited to bring my African experience back into my classroom.
