We Are Wild For Wayside Series Books
Funded Oct 17, 2014My fourth grade students were so excited when they saw the new book series added to our classroom library! All the wanted to do was dive right in and get reading even before our book club unit began! My students are currently showing a genuine eagerness and determination to read as many books as they can in a series. Perhaps what they expressed they were most excited about, was the opportunity to share in reading and learning alongside their peers.
Students are currently reading in partnerships within a club. Each club is reading a different book. Students are given the opportunity to choose a cozy location within the classroom where they can curl up and really dive into their new book. Some students take turns reading to each other, while other partnerships are made up of one higher level and one lower level reader. The higher level reader provides support to their partner by reading difficult parts aloud, while their partner fully participates in all of the high level thinking work the students are doing (what traits describe the character? How has the character changed?, predicting, etc.). After reading a portion of the text, students share with their club what their current thoughts about the characters and plot of the story are. At times clubs are in agreement, while at other (very valuable) times, students disagree and challenge each other's ideas.
The biggest impact that this project has had on my teaching and my students' learning lies in my students' eagerness to read and to help one another. One of the most beautiful things to see as an educator is students supporting one another and growing and learning not just individually, but TOGETHER. Your support has boosted our class community as well as our passion for literature.”

Let's Get Interactive and Organized!
Funded Dec 28, 2014Words can not express how grateful my students and I are for the generous contribution you made to our classroom. The materials have enhanced our learning environment in many ways. For example, we are able to create engaging math and literacy centers to help prepare for the upcoming New York State test. Students have tons of pencils so they are always prepared to work. The educational games help to keep the students engaged, while learning and having fun together with their classmates.
Again, thank you so much for your generosity! We are all so thankful for people like you, who want to support our students learning.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Rainaldi
