  • Interactive Learning Through Touch (Part 2)

    Funded Jan 3, 2012

First, let me start off by saying Thank You for supporting my students and classroom. You have made this project possible. My students LOVE having the extra iPod in the classroom where they don't have to wait for one to become available. They have become actively engaged with so many educational apps such as Reading, Spelling, Multiplication, Addiiton, Drawing, and many more. The iPod has been used for remediation of skills taught within the curriculum, motivation, self initiation, and independency. In having the protective shields and cases, the students will continue to have long use of these devices (they have protected the devices from falls, scratches, and sneezes). Setting up a designated area in the classroom consisting of headphones and the iPods, the students are able to independently participate in their own education.

Thank you for being apart of this Process.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Andrews

  • Interactive Learning Through Touch

    Funded Dec 13, 2011

First, let me start off again by saying Thank You for making this project possible. My students LOVE the iPods and have become actively engaged with so many educational apps. Becoming apart of the technological world, my students have explored a variety of apps that address many different things such as Reading, Spelling, Multiplication, Addiiton, Drawing, and many more. These iPods have been used for remediation of skills taught within the curriculum, motivation, self initiation, and independency. One student who prefers not to participate with the other students in using the computers or other games is now becoming engaged in using the iPods during breaks. So not only are my students learning and practicing skills learned within the classroom, they are now socially interacting with each other; which is another area of SUCCESS!!!!

Thank you for being apart of this Process and Achievement.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Andrews

  • Do As You See Through Video Modeling

    Funded Nov 28, 2011

First, let me start off again by thanking all of you for donating and making this project come alive. It's amazing to see the difference that the portable DVD player has done in the behavior of my students. My intended goal was to give my students a tool that they can use in helping them self manage and engage in appropriate behavior in and outside the classroom. With this device my goal was achieved, where the students are redirecting themselves after viewing the DVD. As an example, one student who had difficulty walking in line first where they use to engage in tantrums such as kicking, screaming, yelling, and running away. Now as part of the routine, before the student gets in line, the DVD player with video clip is viewed demonstrating appropriate walking. With this, the student is now able to fulfill this skill correctly.

So, thank you for making this a SUCCESS!!!! It's Amazing!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Andrews

  • Joyful Reading: Tools for Success

    Funded Apr 16, 2011

First, I will like to start off by saying "Thank You" for supporting me and my students. As you may know I teach an Autism class ranging from mild to high functioning. I have very few students who are working on grade level and those who are just learning the basics of reading. With this being an challenge; frustration and anxiety arise when a student who is learning basic phonemes is asked to read a text that is written on a fourth grade level.

I have found a supplemental resource that has boosted reading skills, engagement, independency, and that is developmentally appropriate. With your donation of integrating the use of the LeapFrog Tag Reader you have decreased many frustrational levels and have brought the love of reading into my students. Any free time they get in the classroom, they are asking for the Tag Reader.

With this, students are becoming more independent and receiving positive feedback in return. This device has assisted many in blending and sounding out words and giving them exposure to reading topics within the curriculum. From my observations, my students are enjoying to read now and are not afraid or intimidated to pick up a book. Without your contribution, this would not have happened. You have made a significant impact in my students' education and lives. Thank You. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Andrews

  • Visions of Unique Children: WHO I AM!

    Funded Dec 23, 2010

First I will like to say, "Thank You" for allowing my students the opportunity to receive this technology in their curriculum. As you know, I work with students who have Autism ranging from mild to moderate. One area of deficiency that I have been working on this year is communication. With your help and donation of purchasing the Flip Video you have made a difference in my student's lives. Allowing them to express how they feel and communicate with others in the form of a video camera.

When I received the camcorder I was so excited to start with my students and they too were excited to see what we were going to do. Thinking how I was going to start a project, I thought why not allow the students to showcase how they have blossomed all year long by displaying their strengths, talents, and growths. Each student was given an opportunity to introduce themselves on camera and show what they do best from singing, dancing, reading, drawing, and telling jokes. Also, we captured social interactions among the students to demonstrate their increase of language and of daily routines.

While doing this project, the students were very involved and wanted to participate. When the camera was on them, they opened up and displayed so much confidence. Once the end product was transferred into a computer program and then to DVD, their eyes lit up as they watched themselves on the television. They were so excited and proud of the work they did and wanted to do more. With this, I am the one, who is Proud of them; and they would have not been able to show this without Your help of opening up this new avenue for them. So, thank you again for being apart of my students' education and lives.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Andrews

  • Visual Aids for Learning: A Picture Speaks Louder than Words

    Funded Mar 25, 2011

Let me start off by saying "Thank You" for always supporting me and my students. As you know I teach children who have Autism ranging from mild to high functioning. Working with this population, I found that there needs to be consistency and structured activities throughout the day. By providing a structured environment that contains visual supports allows the students to be aware of the expectations and daily routines which provides smooth routines and transitions.

In making this possible, the use of visuals have been implemented within the classroom such as daily picture schedules posted on the board, individual schedules and self monitoring charts on student's desks, break cards and problem solving techniques students can use for strategies on how to relax. With your donations, I was able to incorporate the use of a laminator to preserve these picture cards for student's use and allow visuals to remain durable throughout the year.

After laminating these pictures cues, my students are now able to self-manage themselves, follow everyday routines and schedules. Giving them a sense of control of their environment and understanding of expectations. This also allows me to use these same visuals with other students when needed. Thank you for providing consistency my students education allowing success in any environment.

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Andrews
