We are a high poverty school in Southern California. It is unusual to find a two-parent home, and many students are in foster care or living with relatives. Drug use is rampant and our school is surrounded by medical marijuana dispensaries, bars, and crime. Many students have members of the family who participate in racist gangs and they try to indoctrinate teenagers early. In spite of this, students love to come to school where they are sure of a good breakfast and teachers who love and support them. They are committed to their education and many students understand that education is their way to a better life.
