During our "Activism and Progress" unit, scholars analyze social and political movements throughout U.S. history. They investigate the various strategies used by different movements to bring about change. During this unit, our scholars are exposed to the Women's Suffrage Movement, the strategies used by activists during the Montgomery Bus Boycott, analyze the Black Panthers' 10 Point Program and delve into the various legislative proposals posited by the Black Live Matter movement. To foster literacy, students will be analyzing a variety of reading materials, including primary and secondary source material. "One Crazy Summer" is a perfect companion to this unit, as it focuses on someone my middle schoolers can relate to as she navigates through one of the most turbulent and exciting times in American history.
