Cacophony On The Keys

I am so pleased and excited to be able to explain to you the incredible impact your generosity has made in my classroom! Thanks to the donated headphones, my students get to go into the keyboard lab regularly. They love to explore the many sounds these electric pianos can create, but even more exciting for me is that many of my students have learned how to play recognizable melodies! 

I created a checklist of "keyboard lab skills", and the students get time to work independently in the lab. Because each student has his or her own headphones, they aren't distracted by the sounds the other students are making.  I can go from student to student, and "coach" each child individually. My students are so motivated to move through the checklist.  Every student has been able to learn at least one song, and most of them are now using correct fingerings.   Several of them worked through the entire checklist and have moved on to even more challenging music.  

I have several students who can play a major scale with both hands using correct fingerings.  These are students who have never had piano lessons before, and have acquired this skill because they have had the ability to go into the lab and work without distraction.  I am excited about the possibilities for future students.  This is just the beginning of what we can do thanks to the generous donation of headphones!
