As fifth graders, some of my students have been exposed to a multitude of stressors since a very young age, or their entire lives. These stressors have impacted the way they learn and the way they behave. Many students have a difficult time self-regulating their emotions and because of this, they take often "breaks" in the classroom, where they are able to sit in a spot where they feel safe and comforted to relax and calm down. By donating to my project, every child in my classroom would have a daily "break," where they can sit and relax while completing their very important math work. Every day, students go on Chromebooks for a portion of time to work on a math program, called Zearn, which is aligned to our curriculum. With flexible seating options, students would feel empowered to make a choice as to where they want to sit, rather than having to sit in the usual desk and chair, which can be very uncomfortable when it is your only space for four hours a day. Additionally, flexible seating would allow students who struggle with focusing to fidget and move around, which assists in their sensory output, processing abilities, and self-regulation. In essence, I am asking for flexible seating to help my students be motivated to complete their work. We all know that when comfortable, we are all more able to be calm, focused, and productive. This will, ultimately, lead to better understanding of mathematical concepts, higher proficiency scores, and a calm/happy learning environment that meets the needs of my students so that they can reach college and beyond!
