  • Generations of Alaska Recyclers!

    Funded Dec 27, 2021

At this moment, it is snowing! May 8, and we are having snow!

Our winter recycling program has been running smoothly. Our families bring their recyclables to our garage and we bring them up to our wood shop for bagging and tagging.

We are looking forward to when the snow is gone and we can use our grabbers to clean up the school yard!

We are very thankful for the partnership we have with Alaska Liter Patrol and Recycling, Ryan's Air who backhauls the cans and bottles for us. We are VERY thankful to the our Donors from Donor's Choose for providing us upgraded boxes and tools for our recycling program!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hamilton

  • Preserving Alaskan Histories and Stories

    Funded Oct 14, 2021

I am so happy to have this project funded for our students. It's so important to record the sights, scenes, and stories from our Elders. I am not sure yet who funded this but I am very grateful. I have wanted to do this project for many years and hope we can continue it.”

  • 4th Grade Trip Urban Survival

    Funded Apr 4, 2019

I would like to thank you all so very much again for your kind and generous donations to make our trip possible. Our school district is very rural and remote. There are no roads leading in or out other than snowmachine trails in the winter and river routes in the summer. Airplane tickets are $800 round trip so our students don't get to get out much and see any other parts of Alaska.

Our 4th grade trip has been an annual field trip to Anchorage and surrounding areas since the 1980s. A curriculum for the trip called "Urban Survival for the 4th graders" includes things like ordering in a restaurant, going to a movie theater and visiting museums. As funding has dropped over the decades our villages and schools have taken on the challenge of fundraising for this great trip. The students remain pals into their adults years.

This year's 4th grade trip was no exception! The first words out of my student's mouth when leaving the airplane was, "I have so many new friends!" Our close rural communities require a lot of working together as tribal entities and governments. Our students got to collaborate with a famous dog musher, Martin Buser, who visits our villages when coming through on the Iditarod Trail. Thanks to #Uglydogs for their calling attention to our rural remote students for increasing our fundraising efforts!

Visits to the Alaska Sea Life Center in Seward were also a highlight where our students learned about marine biology. With over 34,000 miles of coastline our marine life is a vital part of our subsistence and economic lifestyle.

The Civil Air Patrol headquarters gave the students a special tour of their training facilities. The students got to interview pilots and sit in some of the aircraft that was used for search and rescue. Air travel is the #1 travel industry in our state and our students know a lot about traveling by airplane. This was a great career connection for the students as well.

Students also had some fun times at various entertainment centers where they could run, climb and play various games. The students were given per diem monies in which they could budget their money and purchase their own meals and other things they wanted.

Students had a chance to explore their creativity by painting scarves for Mother's Day.

Again, we are very thankful for the kind donations. We look forward to another great 4th grade trip for out school students next year!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Hamilton

Our rural remote students will learn some fundamentals in how to live in the city including walking on city streets, bus schedules, restaurant behavior, introduce them to museums, science exhibits, farms and zoos. Most of our students have never been been outside of our village. We feel that the experience the students will have traveling to Anchorage will help them gain an understanding of behavior etiquette, how to cross streets, how to order and pay for food, how to ask for help, how to help each other, things to watch out for and be aware of and how to conduct themselves in public places.
