Research shows that the more opportunities students have to engage is mathematical discourse, the better they learn mathematics. I currently teach all subjects, primarily math to grades 1-6 students in a large urban school district where the allocation of funding per student is a fraction of that for their suburban counterparts. My students engage in the mathematical practices of proving, representing and communicating their processes. A document projector is a necessary tool to aid as they present their thinking and strategies, revealing how and what they understand. Often, student discourse is around a concept or student solution which needs to be made visible during the conversation.
