STEAM Library: Blending Science and Literacy in Middle School
Funded Aug 9, 2022Thank you for our beautiful books! With each curricular unit, I showcase a different series of books to accompany our learning. Some I read aloud to engage my students in interesting genres or new ideas, while others I offer to extend student understanding or enhance instruction at specific levels. My students LOVE to read these gems during free time as well. Smithsonian's Human Body book has been the surprise hit of the semester and is by far our most popular new book. I personally am enjoying How to Teach Nature Journaling as I think about spring instruction. These have been an amazing addition to our class library - thanks again!”

Funded Mar 27, 2018We are going to Mars! Thanks to your extremely generous donation, my students are engaged in authentic experiences in their journey to discover space exploration and advanced space science. Reading The Martian gave us many opportunities to plan and implement real experiments and projects in class. So far, students have created and installed a scale model of our solar system through our community, and they are currently working on designing spacesuits for long-distance space travel. Because of donors like you, students in urban areas that may not otherwise have resources are able to learn in exciting new ways. Thank you!”

Funded Sep 5, 2013Thank you from the bottom of my heart for funding my very first Donors Choose project! We unpacked and began using our new tools right away! My students are so excited about our new resources, and they are proud to be able to use this technology on a regular basis. The printer is fantastic for obvious reasons - printing reports, creating and printing artwork, printing pictures of our class, and so much more. But the document camera is even better than I had imagined! The students and I have found so many uses for it in such a short period of time!
I had initially requested the camera for our 6th Grade Math Interactive Notebook. I thought that the camera would make the process easier for the students because they would be able to see exactly how to construct the notebooks and complete the foldables. This proved to be the case, but now the students are even more into their notebooks than before since I am creating it with them in real time. I am also having students put their own notebooks under the camera to explain their thought process in solving complex math problems. By encouraging this think-aloud process with my students, I can already see their critical thinking skills improving! Most recently, we did an impromptu lesson on classifying shells in science. At a student's request, we placed the shells along with the "shell map" under the camera for all to see. They were totally into it! Next week, I have a student teaching us how to create an origami swan - using the document camera, of course!
Every good teacher knows that students must be engaged and excited for real learning and growth to take place. I truly believe that these tools have done this for my class. I will highly recommend these resources to colleagues. On behalf of myself and my 52 sixth graders, a heart-felt THANK YOU!!!”
