My students are mostly immigrant children who are learning English as their second language. They work hard to learn the new culture, new language, and academic subjects at school. The most important component to everything is to learn the new vocabulary to begin the conversation of learning. My students who are in the 6th grade know approximately about 700 English vocabulary words in comparison to the native English speaking students who already knew more than 15,000 words by the time they enter middle school. Our school is one of the only International Baccalaureate school in our district where we teach students to value their learning and become global learners. Using their own background to foster sharing of culture and community building. Those students with more vocabulary words bank become mentors for the ESL students and we all work together to help each other learn and grow.
