One of my favorite aspects of teaching is sharing my love of children's literature with my students. I have seen how engaged students are when reading or listening to a great book! A lack of diversity and representation in children's literature has been and continues to be an area in need of improvement. All students need and deserve to have access to books that reflect their own lives and experiences as well as expose them to lives and experiences unlike theirs. The books in this list were selected to help improve the diversity and representation in my classroom library. They include books written by and featuring people of color. These books will be made available to students in our classroom library as well as used for read alouds. They will also help me facilitate class discussions and lessons about equity, being respectful, and celebrating our similarities and differences. This project will provide my students with opportunities to see themselves or learn about people unlike themselves in the books in our classroom.
