Brightening Your Shine Through Reading

Funded Dec 19, 2018

My students and I truly appreciate your generosity in funding my "Brightening Your Shine Through Reading" project. Because of your kindness, the students have learned to appreciate collaborative conversations. The students have learned to use cooperative learning strategies to share ideas about the same books. The students were placed in literature circles to read select books. They met at scheduled times during class, and their roles rotated. For example, the students learned that all participants were held accountable while reading Walter Dean Myers, Bad Boy.

Because of literature circles, it allowed the students to read more books during class and at home. The students take part in discussing the novels within their groups. In addition, everyone in the group has a responsibility of completing their part in order to participate in the group discussions. The students are now taking the initiative to read other books without my assistance.

As a result of adding the novels to our classroom library, students have taken an interest in reading a variety of novels. There are students in my 5th period class that are so eager to get to the Literature Circles. They are excited about the different responsibilities that are assigned each week for the Lit Circles. Many of the students have taken the initiative and began creating their own schedules for the different responsibilities. It is very exciting for me to see how excited they are to read the novels.”

With gratitude,

Ms. Howard
