Modeling In Physics: Technology In Inquiry

Funded Dec 10, 2013

My students are immensely thankful to Google for providing much needed new equipment for the new Physics C class. In fact, one of my students went on to say that he is now thinking to pursue a career in Physics. For majority of the students, it is extremely helpful in consolidating their knowledge and acquire the skills they need for becoming future scientists. All the students feel strongly that this is a good investment for future.

I use the demo equipment an introductory tool to draw the attention of students into the topic. I use modeling methods to engage the students to come up with their own ideas how to experiment by choosing the appropriate variables. Then the students work in small groups and present their findings to the class and a group discussion follows. This allows for students to be more responsible towards their learning. So far, we did 5 experiments with the new equipment and I am encouraged to see students responding and learning from the labs.

Every time I put out the equipment and I see the excitement in students faces. Clearly there is a change in their approach to learning. Also, it attracts the attention of upcoming Junior AP Physics B students to pursue AP Physics C. Even at the scheduling committee meeting, I pushed the idea to encourage more students to take Physics C with the new equipment we have.”

With gratitude,

Mr. Narisetty
