Third graders love to learn new things. It is a year of transition and the students come to third grade excited for all the rites of passage, especially learning to write in cursive. Many are already attempting to write their names in cursive, so now is the time to put the proper form and habits in place. Each student having the same workbook will allow everyone to start at the same skill level and learn the proper form and habits of cursive handwriting. Consistency in materials helps me set expectations and also allows for me to see who needs additional practice and who is ready to move on. A workbook is also a great way to involve parents who want to help. They are able to see how each letter is being taught and can confidently assist the children at home, knowing they are supporting what is being practiced in the classroom. Many students who struggle with handwriting are often very successful with cursive. It builds their confidence and they are often more legible when they print as a result.
