Many of students are bilingual, while several struggle to understand English. The hand-on approach of art materials enables students to learn through their more favorable spatial and kinesthetic learning styles. Our students are highly urbanized and often struggle to understand other cultures. With the clay materials, after we study Pueblo pottery, the students will be making their own pottery. The clay will also be used for Cubist inspired masks, Egyptian cartouches with hieroglyphics, and Mexican-inspired clay animals. The other supplies, such as the pastels and blending sticks will be used to create he basics of still-life (proportion, value, and overlapping), self-portraits (placement, value) and landscapes (space, perspective, and atmosphere). Sharpies are a fantastic way to enhance many 2-D art projects by tracing the lines in a bold black. The colored Sharpies will be used to make foil art and ceramic tile designs. The glues will be used on a weekly basis from 2-D collages to applying yarn hair for their recycled pop-bottle folk figures. The scratch art boards are an exciting way to show texture in our upcoming animal designs. Differentiating between physical texture versus emotional feeling is a challenging concept for many of our students. All of these materials will be such an exciting boost to our school's art program.
