  • Fun Supplies

    Funded Dec 4, 2023

Thank you so much for giving us the funds to purchase many supplies for our classroom. As my project's title indicated, these were "fun" supplies that my students were able to use right away. With your help, I was able to purchase new toys like the vet and bamboo panda kits that sparked the kids' role-playing imagination. I was able to purchase new manipulatives (like play doh) that meshed fine motor skills with fun. What is more, I was able to obtain much-needed materials to help enhance the art projects that we've been working on all year (like card stock and fancy scissors). We are ever so appreciative of your help. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Garcia

  • Keeping Up With Core

    Funded Jan 12, 2015

My students were absolutely thrilled to receive these resources! Just looking at the bulk of the box made them feel excited! But once they saw the contents inside the box, they cheered enthusiastically. One even student even shouted, "Finally! We get a new calendar!" They were equally excited as I was to receive these generous gifts.

We put the materials to good use right away! We packed our outdated calendar in a closet and integrated the one we received into our daily curriculum. What is more, instead of having a messy collection of lose leaf journal pages, the students were happy to be able to have their very own journal to help keep their writing organized. Now that the students have journals, it is easier to see the chronological growth they are making in their writing. The Common Core kits are a great "may do" activity for those high achieving students who tend to finish their work faster than others.

All of these materials helped me get organized and make teaching easier for me! Thank you so much for your kind generosity. Rest assured that your donations have made a wonderful impact on my students, and we will forever be thankful for it!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Garcia

  • Common Core-tures

    Funded Oct 18, 2013

My students and I are ever so appreciative of your generous donations to our project. The day we opened the boxes containing the much-needed white boards was quite memorable. My students were so excited! The whiteboards empowered them and truly made them feel like miniature instructors teaching a lesson on a miniature white board. They absolutely love them! Thanks to the whiteboards, the students now have a tool to jot down their thoughts when preparing to have a collaborative conversation with their peers, or when analyzing a text for evidence. The white boards make the transition to Common Core so much easier. They also allow me to monitor and assess student understanding by the easy-to-view responses I get with any "check for understanding" question I pose.

We use all the resources obtained religiously. They are all equally valuable. I don't know how I was able to teach so long without a document camera. It's a great tool for allowing children to see things that are being modeled for them either by me or their fellow peers. In the old days, I would have to hold things up for the students in the front of the room when I wanted to give my instructions or model a task. Naturally, it was very difficult for the students sitting in the back of the room to see what I was trying to show them. With the document camera, I can be sitting on a chair in front of the room, and ALL students will still be able to see what I am explaining, as I am explaining it. I love it.

And finally, the books I read to them are rich with exquisite language and imagery that not only promote consistent student engagement, but what is more, they lead to excellent discussions on textual analysis. We have already read and discussed 4 books, and they are anxious to get through the entire collection. We owe it all to you and your generosity. Thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Garcia

My students are already on the right track for Common Core! They are part of a unique Spanish Magnet program that teaches them Spanish in addition to all our other mainstream curricular subjects. Not only are they learning a second (and in some cases third) language, but what is more, they are getting exposed to the customs, traditions, and history of other Spanish-speaking countries. This program gives us teachers the wonderful opportunity to promote cultural awareness and inspire our students to be open-minded. In this day and age, with our ever so culturally-diverse population, speaking a second language SHOULD be a prerequisite for this real-world readiness that Common Core is aspiring to produce. I applaud my students (and their parents) for getting a jump start on the demands of the future job-market. Unfortunately, "new school" comes with new requirements and resources that are somewhat limited in my classroom.
