Students need ways to use their hands and collaborate with others to learn to their fullest ability. COVID-19 sent many of our youngest learners' home in the prime years of falling in love with school and learning. They now have shorter attention spans, a want to always be home, and a desire to be on electronics continually. I want to make lessons and use materials that can draw them into school and spark understanding. We learn to add and subtract bigger numbers in the 2nd grade. We use many strategies to help students understand these concepts. Practicing adding and subtracting on Hundreds Charts, number lines, and eventually with traditional regrouping. The use of the pop its will help little minds see the Hundreds Chart strategy as a game. It will also help them use this strategy correctly by popping the number of pathways they need. The use of the dry erase boards will help them practice many things during class lessons. The fact that the boards have a writing and blank side, plus being magnetic, opens up so many possibilities. The clear page sleeves will help students practice different things in a center or small group setting. It also helps keep copies and paper waste to a minimum. Phonics/Chunking games will help my students play with words and build their reading and writing vocabulary. The dominoes will add so much to my students' understanding of adding doubles and what numbers partner to make 10. We will also use them to make equations that will equal even or odd sums/differences. The uses of these items go on and on. My students will love lessons with these items. Engaging lessons + Hands-on activities = Happy, Smart Children who love school.
