  • Sharp Pencils = Sharp Minds

    Funded Mar 20, 2014

The local people of Hawaii strive to live with aloha. This means that their actions communicate a mutual regard and affection for mankind by extending a warmth in caring with no obligation for return. Your selflessness taught my students a lesson in aloha. They were overwhelmed by your generosity. I had to explain the concept of donation more than once because they had a hard time comprehending the fact that total strangers had given them brand new pencil sharpeners. They are very thankful for both your gift of sharpeners as well as your gift of aloha.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Shannon

  • Science and Engineering Fair

    Funded Oct 29, 2013

It is with sincere gratitude that my students thank you for donating materials that will allow them to enter the state Science and Engineering Fair. They walked into a classroom that had no art supplies on the first day of school. Imagine their excitement when packages full of paints and pencils began to arrive! "Miss, they sent us the good markers!" They were referring to Sharpies versus the off-brand, black markers that quickly run out of ink that I had found at the back of some closet before school began.

They diligently created posters with the theme of Mathematics using the materials you so kindly provided during the week before holiday break.

This project was a huge boost to both morale and learning in the classroom. The students have not had much opportunity to create due to the lack of art materials. You provided my students my students to reach the pinnacle of higher-order thinking skills. My students and I are so very thankful.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Shannon

The benefits of art education are no secret. The most important advantage that the arts provide to my demographic of students is the proven leveling of the "learning field" across socio-economic boundaries. My kids reside in the valley of that field and they have a tremendous climb uphill. Many of my students are homeless and hungry. Others are placed in foster homes or are cared for by relatives while their single parent works. Others raise their younger siblings while their parents addictions go untreated. However, this does not define my students. They are a happy and kind group who manage to climb uphill despite their circumstances. They come to class everyday to learn and better themselves. They even make goals such as "This year I just really, really want to pass the Hawaii State Assessment." And they love art. And they deserve to have the opportunity to showcase their love of art and all that they've learned in math and science at the Hawaii State Science and Engineering Fair.
