Focus on Family Benefits the Classroom
Funded Jul 27, 2018Hello! Thank you so much for funding my project. Last year after seeing that many students did not know how to play simple board games I decided to to a Donors Choose project to help fund board games. However I knew that in the classroom time was limited so that's when I decided to make it a home program. This way parents and children could sit down together and have more family time. I can say that the program is a hit!
I could not get the games out of the boxes fast enough! The students were so excited to be able to take them home. I created a check out system so that I could keep track of who and where the games were going. I also made sure that they had parent permission. Every Friday is game checkout day and my students don't let me forget it!
My next steps for this project is to add more games. The students have already requested more of the same games as well as different games. I am hoping to purchase them at Christmas time when they are usually on sale. I hoped that this project would be successful and it is!”

Tablets for Kinders
Funded Jan 23, 2015Our students were so excited to learn that we would have tablets in the classroom. Immediately they started calling out games that they liked to play and asked it those games could be put on them. The day they arrived was like Christmas! Without delay they started telling me that they knew how to use them and they were ready! I was able to find games that were educational and very interactive.
Games on the tablets were geared to kindergarten standards. For instance, the game Sight Word Ninja. They loved this game! Three words would float around the screen and the student would slice through the word that the computer called out. Other games included CVC skill games where students build 3 letter words.
Using the tablets gave our students another outlet for learning skills that we were also teaching. The students were always engaged in the game that they were playing. There is a small selection of different games however; I notice they tend to go for the sight word games, which was the purpose for the Donors Choose project. There were always cheers when the tablets came out to be used as a part of our centers. This was helpful to me so that I was able to keep track of each child so that they got a turn. The children also learned quick how to care for the tablets. Not one time did I have to remind a child as to how to take care of the tablet. They are always very careful with them, making sure they are turned of properly and put away carefully. I am very proud of the students. ☺”

IPad 4 Education
Funded Aug 28, 2014My students were so excited to be able to have an iPad in the classroom. They immediately started asking me if I had certain games on it that they already knew how to play. I of course didn't have the kind of games that they were requesting however I had already researched games that were not only fun but of course educational. It was a challenge at first with 20 enthusiastic students and 1 Ipad. But we have managed by using a timer so that each student gets the same amount of time. Each student on average can get 30 minutes a week.
The students began using the iPad to play games. Some students needed extra support in letter recognition/sounds, while everyone struggled with sight words. I found many games that the students loved to play while learning these skills. Their favorite game is currently a sight word game called Sight Words Ninja. When the game calls out a words children use their finger to slice through the word.
They have also started documenting the work that they are doing in class using the iPad camera. From using playdoh to create objects to using Lego's to make sight words, they want their accomplishments photographed. Last week the class started packing boxes to send to the troops overseas. My students have been able to document this project.
I really feel that the Ipad has been a valuable tool in the classroom. Students are so excited to be able to use the iPad especially when it comes to photographing their work. Before they can photograph their work we talk about they quality of what they have created. It makes them very mindful of doing good work.
I cannot thank you enough for this gift!”
