As an elementary school teacher in a school described as economically disadvantaged, with more than ninety percent receiving free and reduced lunch, I have seen first-hand what happens when students have not been exposed to the world around them. As a result they tend to miss out on valuable opportunities that could broaden their cultural awareness and enhance their academic achievement. While most parents do their best to provide educational opportunities for their kids outside of the school , the truth is that, many times, lack of money, time or knowledge prevents that from happening . So the responsibility then comes back to the school, my students are excited and eager to experience learning beyond paper and pencil they embrace any chance they get to utilize technology if given the chance.
