Our school has an increasing number of students who are living in poverty. My students are a diverse group of learners, coming from a variety of races, socio-economic, and life experiences. The unifying theme in our room is the passion these students have for reading. Each day students share stories of their reading journey, including tales of picture or word reading books at home to their parents, siblings, and even just to themselves. The excitement they have when they successfully read books pours out of them each day. We engage daily in reading through shared read alouds as well as time spent each day reading to themselves. Students often ask when they their read to self time is as they are anxious to read, either the pictures, the words, or retell a beloved story they have read many times.
