My students live in a modern day war zone. But the kind that society here in America seemingly overlooks. They live in the trenches where food and necessities are sparse, single-parent homes are the norm and where drugs and gangs seem to be a means of respect and survival. I am talking about the ghettos and barrios in Arizona. I teach 8th English Language Arts at a middle school where I get the pleasure of teaching about 150 students each day that are beautiful, Latino children who have come up struggling and foresee a similar future that they live in presently. They are under-resourced and are set up in a society that is working against them. Many of my students are already involved in gangs and are in the workings to make a name for themselves as a drug dealer.
