  • I Think I Can Junior Mathematicians and Scientists

    Funded Dec 9, 2018

Thank you so much for your support and magnanimous generosity. The literacy math books that you have generously donated were used and read by my students during and after each assessment, and during their leisure time. The books helped put in context the skills they are learning in class during my instructions. Some of them liked to read them so much that they requested to borrow them to take home to read. Besides the math literacy books, my students are bowled over to have the amazing sharpener that is able to sharpen their pencils with precision and sharpness in less than 5 seconds flat. The pencil sharpener reduces the numerous pencil shavings trash that would have collected on the floor from students who used their own mechanical sharpeners. They are very happy indeed with the sharpener.

My students enjoy working with a mall group and/or pairs to complete the Math Guided lessons. They had a blast quizzing each other with the correct answers. My sixth graders were more competitive than my sixth graders, they like to switch the lessons among each other, and make a game of which group can get the most correct answers won fruit snacks or butter mints. The kids also had a blast studying and looking at the different kinds of cellular structures of simple plants cells and animal cells. Students were given the opportunity to use the microscope as an incentive for completing their assignments on time and during their recess time. It always warms my heart when I see students interested in science and being curious about life and it's environments.

Thank you donors for making my class such an exciting and exploring year. My students are extremely grateful for your kindness and generosity. It means a lot to my students and I to have the opportunities to use these educational materials to further our education and for making it fun a fun class to learn. Thank you again for your continued support of our children's academia.”

  • Learning and Listening With Colors

    Funded Aug 20, 2017

Thank you very much for your support and generosity. The 'Map Skills' activity books that you have generously donated were used and read by my students during Social Studies time. Students enjoy learning about maps, cardinal directions, identifying map symbols and legends and how to locate places on a map. The activity book is used to reinforce the reading skills and map skills that they had already learned and practice building fluency and comprehension.

The students have enjoyed reading the Scholastic News weekly articles at their leisure during Guided Reading time. They read the articles with a partner and work on completing the comprehension part of the highlighted issue/event on the back of the magazine for 15 minutes. At the end of each issue or event, the students are asked to summarize in their own words about it and which part of the stories or issues they enjoyed reading or found interesting.

My students have a wide range of reading skill levels, from 1st grade to 4th grade reading levels. They all enjoy science and science-fiction related topics, and fantasy and mystery alike. The 'Map Skills' activity books and the 'Scholastic News' magazines that you donated help with bridging science and social studies issues with reading and literacy related topics that are interesting and engaging. They motivate the students to want to learn about new things, ideas, issues and events that are happening around them and around the world.

As for me, the fadeless papers made our house hallways and my room colorful, print-rich and very aesthetic. They provide the opportunities for me to showcase my students success and a place for them to show their skills and be recognized by others within the school so that they could be proud of their progress and accomplishments.

Thank you again for you donations and generosity. My students and I greatly appreciated it.”

    With gratitude,

  • 5th Graders Need New Books!

    Funded Sep 8, 2016

Thank you very much for your support and generosity. The books that you have generously donated were used and read by my students during Independent Reading/Journal Writing time. During the day that I assigned for Independent Reading, students read for 15 minutes and answer a response to a short written prompt from describing about the characters to determining the reasons why the author chose the setting for that story or determining the main idea of the story and identifying the Author's Purpose. The Independent Reading time is used to reinforce the reading skills that they had already learned, and practice builds fluency and comprehension.

My students have been enjoying reading the book at their leisure during Guided Reading as Library Reading Center time and during 'Independent Reading/Journal' time. They choose a book that they like and read for 10 to 15 minutes. They answer questions to story elements, such as identifying the setting, main characters, problem-solution-conflicts the characters are having, explaining in a short paragraph what part of the book they like best or worst, and have them relate the story to their experiences.

My students have a wide range of reading skill levels, from 2nd grade to 7th grade reading levels. The boys in my class enjoy science and science-fiction related topics, while girls like mystery and fantasy related books. However, the books that you donated are more useful to my lowest reading group. These are the students that are still struggling with word synthesis and word analysis. So the books with lots of pictures and captioned sentences help my students learned the words they see and put them into context. The students retell the events and how the character's actions were making them laughed and they would turned around to talk and discuss their stories with other students and pointing particular things of interest out to their friends. That's when I know that they had enjoyed reading their book.

Thank you again for your donations and generosity. My students and I greatly appreciated it.”

  • Let's Listen!

    Funded Dec 20, 2013

My students and I wanted to thank you for given us the chance to use a listening center where we can actively engaged in our reading selections and reinforced reading fluency skills. They were surprised to see it one day next to the computers, and wondered what it was used for. When I told them that they will use it to listen to previous stories that we'd read at their own leisure, and that they could use it to listen to music when they have completed or finished their classwork assignments, they were ecstatic.

Most of the time my students used the CD player to listen to stories that we had read before that I had recorded, during Guided Reading center time. However, some of my students used it after school during my Homework Tutoring sessions when I had completed the reviewing and tutoring of the homework assignments or any other math or reading skills they needed to work on.

This project helped my students gain ownership of their reading and listening skills, at the same time provided them the opportunity to relax and enjoy musics that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to listen on a daily basis.

Thank you again for your generous support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Tan

My school is an inner-city, Title I public school, consisting of about 62% Latinos and 31% African Americans. My 3rd grade students come from broken homes and economically disadvantaged families. Due to drastic and radical changes in our school's funding, our students are again short-changed into working with outdated books and lack of appropriate reading leveled books this coming year. The teachers at our school are scraping our own funding barrels to keep our students engaged and enthusiastic about reading and writing and becoming great potential citizens. Although my students are faced with these shortcomings they are eager learners and want to succeed in their education. With your generous support they will achieve their goals one year at a time.
