"Wonder" in Spanish for a Bilingual 5th Grade Shared Read

Help me give my students an engaging shared reading experience about empathy and compassion. I have requested it in Spanish because my students are in an immersion program becoming literate in both English and Spanish.

  • Graphic Novels for Excited 5th Grade Readers

    Funded Oct 7, 2024

Thank you so much for donating these wonderful graphic novels. There's nothing like colorful, well-written graphic novels to inspire readers of this age! These books are modern, relatable and relevant to my fifth grade readers. They help to motivate students to read and learn to read for pleasure! Many of the books have main characters around their age who go through experiences my students can relate to. That makes reading relatable and relevant to them.

In addition to our language arts curriculum time, students have free reading time when they are allowed and encouraged to choose books that interest them. Having current graphic novels to choose from makes reading very appealing and increases student engagement in free choice reading time!

Thanks so much for your generous donation! The students and I appreciate your thoughtfulness!”

  • Water Bottles for Healthy Students

    Funded Jul 12, 2024

Thank you so very much for your donation of water bottles and water bottle stickers! My students really appreciated them, especially during the first few hot months of school! Believe it or not, taking turns at the water fountain can be very disruptive to class. Having water bottles has helped us not only to stay hydrated, but to be less disruptive while we get those needs met.

Not only have students been able to stay well-hydrated, but they have also been motivated by the water bottle stickers to reach goals and demonstrate desired behaviors. They like to choose the stickers when they earn an award, and they are able to show their personal interests and identities with the stickers we received.

Additionally, I really liked that the water bottles we received were aluminum, because I think aluminum makes water taste better than it does plastic bottles and aluminum bottles get us farther away from plastic consumption. Thank you very much once again!!”

  • STEM for Bilingual 5th Graders: Grow Our Brains

    Funded Sep 20, 2023

Thank you so much for your generous donations to my class. My students love our new class pet jellyfish and they are so easy to take care of! ; ) We have combined the jenga games with a math card game to provide a super fun way for us to practice and develop automaticity with math facts like subtraction, multiplication and division.

We used the new watercolors to make artwork and cards for a classmate who lost a loved one and will continue to use them for various projects throughout the year. It's so nice to use new watercolors that have not been mixed! The pencils have of course been useful and having a giant stock pile of them helps us stay organized and well-prepared.

The non-fiction graphic texts have provided a new and attractive way for students to learn and be interested in science topics. They have been very popular!

Thank you so much again for your donations and your generosity!”

  • Amazing Books for Amazing Bilingual 5th Grade Readers!

    Funded May 11, 2023

Thank you for this incredible gift of books and pictures and experiences. My students love reading, and above all they love reading graphic novels. It takes a lot of books to fan the flames of excitement for books and I am so grateful that my students have these new books to stay excited for reading.

Because of your support for our classroom library, my students have access to new and engaging books (and in Spanish) for our daily dose of independent reading. The Dog Man series is by far the most popular book in our library.

Thank you so much for making this possible.”

  • Encourage Reading in Our Home Language: Graphic Novels in Spanish

    Funded Dec 14, 2022

Thank you so much for your contributions toward buying graphic novels in Spanish! The books are very attractive to kids and have helped me to encourage my students to continue practicing reading in Spanish. Schools and libraries tend to have many more new and attractive books available in English than in other languages and it becomes difficult to interest older students in reading more advanced books in Spanish. These new graphic novels make reading in Spanish fun and enticing! For the students who prefer reading in Spanish, these new books allow them to engage with the latest new books the other students are reading in English.

My students find these books relatable and really enjoy the graphic novel genre. I requested series of books by the same author because many times a student will enjoy a book that's part of a series and therefore be motivated to read the other books in the series. Having beautiful, fun, engaging books makes reading more attractive to all students and increases motivation! Thank you so much for your generous donations!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Carver
