Reading to Escape From Reality
Funded Dec 5, 2016The John Dewey "Just Dew It" Key Club would like to thank you for your generous contributions and donations to our first ever book drive. Your donations helped purchase almost $700 worth of new books, which we donated to children in the local homeless shelter and Maimonides hospital. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take any pictures of the Key Club donating the brand new books to the children in need for many legal reasons including that some of our own students from John Dewey High School reside at the homeless shelter.
These books purchased ranged from informational texts, science, sports and children's educational resources and tales. The children living at the homeless shelter and the children's ward do not have the best living conditions and if there is anything a book can do for a child it is to take them out of their reality and broaden their knowledge and mind. It is a shame that we live in a world where children are hurting and experiencing things that no human being should have to face.
These books brought smiles to their faces along with the students of the Key Club. Without your act of kindness and support during this project, none of this could have happened. Although it may be a small gesture by giving books to these children, it is memories like these that will be engrained in their hearts forever. I hope I can look for your help and support in future projects as the Key Club is a student-organized club that focuses on giving back and building the school and outside community by improving the lives of others.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Artzt
