The children will use these materials to learn about food preparation, planning a menu, using measurement with ingredients for their food, and the cookbook will work on reading and math skills. The electric oven will replace our broken range and once we have the new oven/range, the children will be able to use it for cooking foods from the cookbook that is also a part of this project. Each of the low incidence classrooms will use the oven and each classroom will have a cookbook to help with the process. The oven/range is essential to learning life skills for independence and the cookbooks will provide a guide. The cookbooks will also help with reading through the use of the recipes. In addition, the cookbooks will provide a structured plan using and learning measurement skills. These children with low incident disabilities will again more independence by making food, preparing a shopping list, and going to the local grocery store to buy their ingredients. One of the most important learning is for independence. The life skills lab is where children learn to be more independent through learning about using money, following a schedule, using time management, and working with others.
