Even though my students are in high school, they are performing mentally and socially at elementary or below levels. I have two students with limited to no walking ability and another who has a severe seizure disorder. These three students also have other extreme health issues and limitations. My other students have mental challenges, autism, and other rare mental disabilities. We are in a self contained classroom all day where I teach them everything from academics to life skills. They enjoy various types of music, literature, and visually stimulating lessons. They are currently enjoying current events.
I have very high expectations for them even though others may not. A poverty-stricken location, minimal support and understanding doesn't limit their zest for life and learning. My students are often more excited to try new things than their peers. They amaze others and myself by trying and absorbing any task placed before them.
I'm proud to have been chosen to be their educator.
