Through my Family and Consumer Science classes, I teach a diverse group of students in a high poverty school. My classes are predominantly comprised of African American and Hispanic, Special Education, and ESOL students. The large majority of my classes live below the poverty line. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1/3 of adults in the United States are obese, and many links have been found between socio-economic status and obesity. Because my students are teenagers, they are creating an identity as consumers, and it is my responsibility to educate them about how to live a healthier life.
