  • Of Mice and STEM Kits

    Funded Aug 23, 2022

The STEM kits have been a hit!

These awesome kits have been used so much throughout this school year. In the mornings when students get into my classroom they are welcome to create with any of the STEM kits they want to. Instead of just sitting around, they have the opportunity to create and build before class starts. During school, there have been many times where testing, fundraising, whole school activities such as plays, or pep rallies, sudden schedule conflicts, and other miscellaneous situations, have given us spare time. This spare time has turned into fun, imaginative, time for my students.

I anticipated that my students would challenge themselves and be creative, which they have done! A wonderful surprise that I saw from these kits was the collaboration between my students as they built and created. My students often work together with the STEM kits, and it has created helpful lessons in communication between my students. The Coding Mice has brought this out in many of my students. They take turns coding the mouse, and they help each other and learn form everyone's mistakes. Phrases like 'Yeah, I think that maybe next time you should..." or "Since the mouse keeps going off the board, maybe we should...." have been some of my favorite things to hear this year. Several of my students are still learning how to solve sides to the puzzle cubes, and instead of keeping it to themselves, they have taken the time to teach each other as they learn.

What an awesome time we are having in 4th grade! This could not have been possible without your kindness. Thank you for being apart of these students' education.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Luttrell

  • Just Bring Yourself!

    Funded Aug 2, 2022

As we began this school year, we quickly realized the need for targeted interventions with our students in both math and reading. Hours have gone into planning, discussing, and organizing the plan for every single student in their area of their need. I wish I could properly explain the relief and the peace of mind to have the timely supplies you helped purchase for my students.

In my classroom I have created 2 intervention areas. The white cart contains pencils, Post-its, whiteboard markers, pens, erasers and other supplies needed for the intervention activities. If students ever need to get pulled to one of the stations during class or during their intervention time, it is as easy as calling their name! There is no chair dragging and no supply collecting. Most of all, it preserves as much instructional time as possible.

The students were so excited to get the headphones and use them daily for their Math and reading programs. These programs are so important for their academic growth and to be able to listen to the program videos or explanations of content. Headphones may seem like a small tool, but you have helped 60 students focus in my math class throughout the day who may not have had access to headphones otherwise.

The attitude towards academic growth in my room has been affected because of how efficient these tools have made our time. The students have seen how easy it is to get help without losing time on tasks. These intervention centers have become places of safety. One student in particular who is very reserved has started to open up and answer questions with more confidence than she did before. It is now to the point where she asks me if she will get pulled by me during her intervention time, and when I answer with "yes" she smiles and says "ok!".

Some of our Special Education students have also benefited greatly. During instructional time, they are able to go to one of the back areas to get assistance form their co-taught teacher while we work on our tasks. As I mentioned before, the centers and readily available supplies protects the instructional time every time.

The future is bright for these students! Thank you for showing them support and love through your donation.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Luttrell

  • Unfolding Creativity in the Math Classroom

    Funded Dec 18, 2019

Origami in the classroom has added another dimension to the culture and atmosphere in 4th grade. Many geometry terms have been introduced by showing students the beautiful and well drawn diagrams in the books that were purchased for my classroom. Terms like point, line segments, vertical lines, horizontal lines, angles, and lines of symmetry have all been embedded in our origami practices and conversations. One of the books even has instructions on how many degrees it takes to rotate a model (Ex: rotate the model 90 degrees to the right) which created such a great conversation on angles and how angles relate to rotation. Students seeing how geometry terms are used and applied in an art, like origami, has helped students process these concepts through real world experiences.

This is in addition to the culture fostered by creating the origami itself. One unexpected surprise was how well differentiated it could be. Many students who struggle with origami begin with the easier diagrams and have challenged themselves with harder and harder models. My students who do well in origami and in math have also found models to challenge them. It is refreshing to see all my students in the midst of a challenge at the same time. One moment in particular, I had two students struggling to make a tiger that another student had mastered the week before. He gladly, on his own accord, went to them and explained how to make the folds on the tiger and cleared up their confusion. In that moment I saw two students overcome a challenge and a student who became a teacher. These are scenarios that all teachers dream about seeing and I am seeing more and more of these moments as the weeks go on. Students see their own peers make beautiful models and they gain confidence and jump in. The students who have mastered the model are more than willing to help with their knowledge.

I have used origami in several small lessons but because I believe origami also helps students with their spatial perception, I have done some small group work in making intermediate models. The origami station is also in full use on Fridays for the last 20 minutes of math class and early morning before class begins for the students to explore freely. I have also been able to go to different grades during my spare time to teach the younger students about origami and cover some grade level geometry. The Origami station that I was gifted has completely surpassed my expectations and I am excited to see what the students will create next.”

Help me create a culture where students want to trial and error, persevere, analyze diagrams, and have fun. The books will provide them with many different projects at many levels which will allow students to find something to succeed in, and the paper will be a huge step above scrap paper from the teachers lounge. All of these supplies will be kept in a designated Origami Station. Origami is known to be good in the development of eye hand co-ordination, sequencing skills, spatial skills, memory, but also patience and attention skills. Not to mention that Origami IS Math because it covers: -Symmetry (the majority of origami patterns require symmetrical work) -Measurement, Fractions & Proportions (are you making a fold 2/3 of the way up? or half way) -Geometry (are you folding into a triangle or a square) -3D Comprehension -Sequencing -Problem Solving
