Our school serves approximately 700 students, is a Title 1 school, and about 98% of our students are on free/reduced lunch. Many of the students in my art classes are very often in awe when I introduce anything remotely special such as pastels, paint, yarn, or colored papers. They seem to have been exposed to so few materials at home. They often tell me they don't even have crayons, markers, a ruler, or even paper at home. My art room is given $50.00 per year to try and cover materials for 500 students for the entire year. I would love to reward my 5th grade students with the use of a calligraphy pen, along with a variety of nibs, and the beautiful jet black waterproof ink to create striking copies of their own poetry. This age is old enough to show responsibility of the safe handling of these particular art materials.
