Teaching On The Move
Funded May 6, 2020When it was first announced that we would be teaching remotely, I realized how unprepared I was. I had my own personal laptop and had a small printer at home but from the offset, I realized it wasn't enough to effectively teach and manage 25 eager Kindergarten students.
Thanks to your generosity, I was able to receive another laptop and additional items that have made remote teaching enjoyable and productive for myself and my students.
While one of the original items wasn't available, the replacements have been equally helpful in making sure I reach my students and create an environment in my home conducive to online instruction.”

Funded Aug 13, 2020Every single item on this list has been instrumental in creating classrooms in my student's homes. As Kindergarten students, learning is already challenging. Having a set of wipe boards, counters, linker cubes among other items has helped them solidify concepts in math, and facilitated real time writing practice and support.
The students are proud of their items, and protective of them too because they have a "classroom at home". They were excited to use them on their very first day and continue to be just as excited now.
The parents were appreciative and have helped with the care of each item.
We, honestly, could not have achieved much without your help.”

Funded Aug 27, 2020My students' lessons are magical because they have all the supplies needed to make them a success. Dry erase boards, math boards, beginner pencils, manipulatives and storage for these items, ensure that we all have access to the same supplies and can manipulate them in the best way to ensure we are learning.
The ease of teaching math with math boards and manipulatives cannot be overstated. My students have access to counters and linker cubes which make learning quantities and manipulating them a breeze. These are going to be resources that ensure that remote children will have access to the same quality supplies as in-person students and for that I cannot thank you enough.
We will continue to benefit from these bags our entire remote experience.”

Cri-cut To Creativity
Funded May 12, 2018We are so very thankful to have a Cricut machine for our classroom. It helps to put our ideas on display and highlight our creativity. We are able to come up with a plan, do a mock up on our computers, and then have the Cricut make it for us.
It has helped us with class posters, charts and name labels. It helps because the writing or cutting is easy to read and we are able to refer to it since we designed it.
It is also just a fun addition when we are creating cards or any other gift. We are all very thankful to you all.”

Funded Jan 26, 2018The opportunity to have this trip will be an experience that my class will never forget.
I first met my students as their teacher in Fourth grade. This is my second year with the majority of them now in Fifth grade. As we discussed graduation and moving on to new schools next year, it became clear that most of my students had never traveled outside of the five boroughs of New York and more than a few had never left their neighborhood. It was then that we decided that we needed our last trip together to be an amazing one. My students were given a list of trips. Only two were outside of the New York- Philadelphia and Washington DC. Once we narrowed it down to what each could potentially teach us, they wrote persuasive essays on which they would prefer.
The experience of the Lincoln memorial, the Black History museum at the Smithsonian, the White House and every landmark in between will be both educational and formative as they become young adults. To see these up close, hear their history and understand their importance is an experience that I wouldn't have been able to provide without your generosity. I thank you.”

Choose Your Own Volume!
Funded Jan 26, 2018Technology opens up world of possibilities for our students in the classroom. My students use IPads to research material for their writing pieces, look up vocabulary words and get news worthy information for class conversations. For this specific project, some of our students will be using it to have music in their ears through wireless headphones as the class works on tests or writing pieces. We have learned that some students benefit from the additional stimulation, but others not so much, so with this project we can meet their needs without compromising the quality of the classroom for the rest.
Children learn much differently now than a few years ago. Meeting students where they need to be, and addressing needs as they come up, ensure that there is success in the classroom.
I thank you immensely for your generosity in making my children better learners.”

Funded May 9, 2017Our basketball team made it all the way to the championship game due in part to hard work and arduous practices. Your donations to purchase new and more challenging practice equipment will go a long way towards ensuring that our children continue to work as a team and enjoy every second of it. The pinnies make practices more efficient since teams are now clear, the rebounding hoop helps to ensure that everyone is actively engaged when playing, and the overall enjoyment during practice has improved greatly. We are so very thankful to you all.”

Funded Dec 20, 2016My students love the independence of taking notes based on what they consider to be important facts. The concern was that this was always done individually and they often didn't have the same facts when working in a group. With a laptop they now have defined roles- one student is a "recorder"- he/she is fed the information from the "fact-checker" that student is in charge of making sure the facts are all agreed upon by the team; another student is an illustrator and makes sure that all the features of the animal are recorded/drawn. When completed the group researches their project and document all on the laptop. Their presentation is done using the smart board. They are able to do this on paper of course, but this additional resource exposes them to computer skills which we wouldn't normally have available.”

Touch and Learn Science
Funded Dec 5, 2016I want to thank you for the generosity displayed towards my children. They were overwhelmed upon receiving a personal microscope and slides and are beyond excited to use them both in class and at home.
The Fourth grade focuses on cells and their characteristics. It is a reading unit and prior to your donation, there was one microscope to share. The difference in each student having their own, observing and recording without needing to be rushed is pretty amazing. They are able to understand the unit better, and are excited to see all slides.
Our next steps is to move from the prepared slides into the children's interests as they take blank slides home and prepare them in order to share with their classmates.”
