All of our stories are important, and we are at that point in the year where my students are writing poems that speak from their hearts. Best of all they are excited to slam some poems for each other. This means conjuring up bravery and a voice that grabs the attention of the room. This is where we need help. While the stories are coming, some raw and some inspiring, we are in need of a microphone and amp to project these powerful voices.
We would use the microphone daily during our poetry unit for slamming poems, as we get the lighting right, and watch each poet step to the microphone.
These moments are ones that deepen our community and relationships with each other, the moments when students who have been reluctant to write all year shine. Most of all this project will help to provide moments where we actually see each other with our hearts.
Finally, this microphone and amp will continue to serve to teach public speaking throughout the year as students use it for other literacy units such as reading our short stories aloud during our dystopian fiction writing unit, giving persuasive speeches, and others.
