Building Classroom Community

Funded Nov 16, 2018

We were so excited to get our new classroom carpet. The students love having their own personal learning space. It has made partner work on the carpet so much easier. In our school district the big push is for students to have academic conversations. The carpet gives us a spot to have these conversations and helps the students keep their bodies in their own personal space making it much easier for everyone to get along.

The students were thrilled with the new rug. Their first comments were how clean and soft it was. Everyone wanted a chance to lay on it. For the first week or so they would hand pick any little bits of paper off of it, they wanted to keep it clean and nice looking. After the initial surprise, they quickly came to appreciate that they each had their own special spot on the rug. We have assigned spots so there is no arguing over where to sit. They also love the little competition that we have with the row colors (ex. The purple row is sitting so quietly, you may get a big drink of water at the fountain).

Students have been work on animal projects. They are doing research and creating individual google slides presentations. Having the carpet as an alternative seating option has been wonderful. Many student often choose to sit or lay down on the carpet to work on projects. I am currently looking for other alternate seating options so students will have even more choice. The goal is to have students engaged and learning. You have all helped my students more than you know and I am so grateful for your kindness.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Skinner
