Creating independence and job skills is the primary focus of my classroom. The goal of this project is to do both of those things. First the students will create a variety of cards such as Holiday cards, Birthday, Mother’s Day/Father’s Day, Get well, Congratulation cards as well as others. The students will make multiples of each card and advertise to sell them to the student body and staff as a way to make money for the school club. The reason this Cricut machine will help our class is because my students have a very difficult time using scissors to duplicate shapes. Instead of always having to cut out shapes, or draw shapes they can attempt to cut out, they can use my personal iPad to choose shapes that go with the design of their card and have the machine cut it out.
Not only does this project encourage independence, the students will gain work skills such as, finishing a job, having a product and creating a duplicate product, and they will working as a team to make the business run. The students will also be in charge of taking money and giving change which is something all of the students are working on learning in the classroom, but don’t get a lot of real world chances.
I think this project will be a good fundraiser for our club because cards at a store range from typically 3 to 6 dollars. The staff at this school sends cards to each other during birthdays, times of sympathy, and other occasions. I believe if the students offer staff options to by cards from my class at a cheaper price the students have a great chance to raise a lot of money for their club.
