Legos "STEM" Engineers

Funded May 10, 2023

My 4th & 5th grade students have been utilizing the Legos purchased for a STEM Lego Challenge week. We started by learning the history of Legos and observing videos on how Legos are made and how mini-figures are created at the Lego plant. They have had two opportunities to do free builds and just be creative. Additionally, we have done Lego Marble Mazes (each student designed a maze to get a marble through), read a book about the origins and history of Pizza and then worked to create either a pizza oven or pizza, and also worked as teams to build an island that was faced with some challenges (pirates attacking, running out of food, zombies coming, and/or a thief on the island that needed to be trapped).

My students have LOVED this week! When I told them they would have a whole week of Lego time, they were absolutely ecstatic! Students have been actively engaged, working in teams, and working through the engineering design process throughout the week. I have truly enjoyed seeing my students love learning through the medium of Legos. I have been able to witness a lot of creativity that I don't always get the opportunity to see from my students. I am so grateful for these supplies!

Next up, I'll be expanding the use of Legos to 1st-3rd grade and planning challenges for them. I will also be using Legos as an "early finisher" and reward item with my older students.”

With gratitude,

Mrs. Campbell
