  • Read to be Ready!

    Funded May 27, 2017

In order to grow students as readers, I need to provide and do some very specific things. One and most importantly I need to provide good quality, level appropriate books with a story line. Too many books for early emergent readers are basic without a story line, this might help with word recall but not with comprehension. The books you provided allow my students to not only use high frequency words, CVC words, but also provide a easy but relatable story line. Second, I need to been a keen observer of behaviors/ strengths that the student possesses and build on those. Lastly I need to give specific prompts, as the student reads, in order to build on those known skills so the student knows exactly what to try or do. Using the books provided I can help grow students knowledge of word decoding, fluency, and comprehension.

In my classroom I utilize guided reading as part of my literacy block. This is an opportunity for me to work with my students in a small group. Guiding students through how books work, how to decode using many different strategies, and modeling how to retell stories. The books provided are used during my guided reading lessons.

All of my Kindergarten students are so excited to read the books provided. However, I have several students who are able to read many of the books at this moment. All students have access to the books in guided reading since I use the lower level books to teach reading behaviors that some students might not have at this time.

Thank you for helping me teach my Kindergartners the love of reading, how to manage a book, and grow them as readers with your donation of these leveled readers.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Goodwin

  • Meet, Greet, and Learn!

    Funded Sep 11, 2013

My students were so excited the morning they walked into our room and saw our new rug! I wish you all could have seen their faces. They kept touching it saying how soft it was, how pretty it was, and how exciting it was.

We have certainly put the rug to use. We use it for our morning and our Wrap Up meetings each day, as well as our gathering spot for our Daily 5 mini lessons. We have also enjoyed using the outside edge with the letters and pictures for phonemic awareness and phonics activities.

My EL students are able to see a large visual for letter sound pictures and they really enjoy being able to use the rug for games. The rug is large enough for my entire class to sit on and be comfortable during our meeting times. This has in turn created a more enjoyable learning space in our classroom community.

I cannot express how grateful and thankful I am to all of you for caring for my students and for helping to create a comfortable learning environment.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Goodwin

I will be returning to the classroom after 3 years of being a Reading Recovery teacher for my District. Kindergarten is my first love and I am excited about returning! This year I am teaching Kindergarten in a Title I school. We are considered Title I due to 65%+ of our population participates in the Free/ Reduced School lunch Program. My goal is to create a community in my classroom where all students feel safe, therefore allowing them to take risks they would typically not take. By taking those risks, feeling comfortable and safe, the students should be able to meet District and State benchmarks with my guidance.
