My students attend a very low income school with families who experience many hardships. The students in my class favor hands on projects that allow them to think as well as stories that go along with the hands on materials. I want to provide the children with the opportunity to become strong readers and listeners so they will become lovers of literature. Many children struggle after leaving Kindergarten due to their lack of exposure to literature and I do not want this to happen this year. I want to provide as many opportunities for the children to choose a favorite book and read as much as possible in the time that I have them. My children have set a goal to read 100 books this year but I am afraid that we are going to have to struggle to find books that the children will listen to and be able to recall information from what they hear; children read, recall and retell to become strong readers and this is my goal.
