My students are eighth graders in a school that has traditionally performed very poorly. However, we are all working very hard to increase the rigor and help our students find the academic success they have lacked in the past. Many of my students are generally unmotivated, but they have good hearts. I attribute much of the lack of motivation to the fact that they have become accustomed to failure. I am trying to instill confidence in them with every day that passes. The ability to learn by making connections between literacy and math would be a great accomplishment for them and would serve to narrow the academic gaps that seek to hold them back.
