Discoveries: Whooo Did They Eat?
Funded Dec 13, 2009Thank you all for your generosity!! Your contributions helped to fully fund our "Discoveries: Whooo Did They Eat?" donors choose grant. As soon as we received out pellets and instructional video, we began our investigations. After students learned that these predatory birds, who swallow their prey whole, regurgitate a pellet approximately twelve hours after eating, they were ready to dissect pellets in order to determine the diet of "their' owl.
As you can see from the photographs, the students, feeling quite like scientists in their goggles and latex gloves, dissected the pellets by removing all hair and fur from these fumigated, sterilized samples. Once the fur and hair was separated from the bones, they placed the bones on bone charts provided for identification of the prey species. Students then analyzed their findings, and tallied up the prey animals found in the pellet. From there, they made estimates about the annual amount of prey caught by their owl. After collaborating in groups and conducting research, the students created food webs with the owl at the top. Your donation provided a motivating, fun, and educational set of activities for our students.
Thank you!”

More Than Meets the Eye!
Funded Oct 19, 2009Thank you for your generous donation to our "More Than Meets the Eye" project for which we received thirty student microscopes and prepared slides of many organisms. You should hear the excitement as students focus these very user-friendly scopes. Our students were thrilled to see the "unseen" which greatly enhances our discussion of microscopic organisms and scientific tools.
We have had microscopes in the past, but never enough for each student to work independently at his own pace. The students were thrilled to work this way, as they usually work with one microscope for a group of five or six.
Without your generosity, these students, the other thirty classes that use the science room, and countless future students will learn from and enjoy your donation. Thanks you, again!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Rozza
