The students at my school range from grades Kindergarten through Fifth grade. They reside in a large school district that cannot always meet the unique needs of the students at our school. Our students are sweet, caring, and creative but many struggle with issues relating to poverty. Nearly half of the students rely on free or reduced lunches. Many families have seen a number of tragedies including house fires, homelessness, drug abuse, and gang involvement. On top of already existing poverty issues, our area was hit with the power of Hurricane Sandy last fall and many families are still struggling to regain a sense of normality. Regardless of all of the hurdles my students have had to overcome, they remain hardworking and resilient. They come to school each day excited to learn and inspired by the many wonderful peers and teachers that surround them each day.
