Humanity, Japanese Internment in America, and Graphic Noves
Funded Oct 21, 2022I cannot thank you each enough. Having a diverse set of texts is key to remaining relevant in the classroom, and this story and topic is too important to not share with students. J can’t wait to share George Takei’s story and discuss this often too overlooked part of American history.”

Diversity and Comics in the Classroom
Funded Sep 16, 2018My students and I cannot thank you all enough. This book was part of our Identity unit. In this unit, we dissected the identities of characters in short stories, novels, and comics, and then we related that to our own lives. Students used basic literary terms as well as characterization. With the comic book that ya'll paid for, students of color were able to read a novel that looked like them. The comic featured African-American characters, paired with The Absolutely True-Diary of a Part-Time Indian, allowed students, who normally only read stories in English about white characters, the opportunity to relate to characters on a different level. After reading this book, I had several students say things like "I usually hate the books in English class, but I loved this book." "I've never read a comic before, and now I want to try it out!" "I almost always hate English class, but this is different." These testimonies are EXACTLY why I do what I do, and I cannot thank ya'll enough for providing me these materials to use in my classroom.”
