Most of my students are from single. women headed households. Their parents are considered, part of the working poor or poor people in our city. They are from drug and crime invested communities where they not only see it in the street, but in some of their own homes. Many of my students that are homeless, living in shelters, foster homes or with relatives and separated from their families. I have some students that do not want to go home at night because of their situations at home. They stay in school as long as possible, because they are with people that they know that care about them. My students are not performing as well as their peers academically for a variety of reasons. I provided a summer reading program and the students that showed up were far below their reading level. They were unable to comprehend what they were read and needed consistent support. By the end of program students were able to read an entire book, put into words what they read and what it meant to them.
