Encouraging Diversity in Science
Funded Mar 10, 2022Teaching science is exciting because kids love to work together and to learn through experimentation. My goal is for my students to see themselves as scientists, now and in the future. A small way to further that goal is for students to be able to see themselves working in scientific fields such as astronomy. What is more exciting than outer space?
When my students draw a scientist, they typically draw someone who looks like Albert Einstein. They don't draw a woman or a person of color - even if the student themselves is female, black, hispanic, etc. These posters are a daily and visible reminder that anyone can be a scientist. If they want to, they can go to space or walk on the moon. The sky's the limit!
I smile every time I look at these posters knowing that my students see themselves reflected in a positive and inspiring way. They will know that even if they don't choose to be a scientist, the choice is theirs to make. Thank you so much for making this project happen.”

A Colorful Fifth Grade Class
Funded Apr 28, 2021Thank you so much for your generous gift of a color printer. The printer is the gift that keeps on giving. I love printing charts, postcards, and inspirational posters in color. It brightens up my classroom and everything pops instead of just blending in. But more importantly my students love seeing their work displayed in color. Fifth graders are excited about technology and working on their Chromebooks. Last year we did posters in black and white and this year having them in color made a huge difference! Thankfully, the world is not black and white and neither should the kids work be.”

Snacks for Fifth Graders.
Funded Apr 2, 2021Thanks so much for making this difficult school year a little bit easier for my students. As you know the 2020-21 school year held a multitude of challenges for kids. However, there were some positives that helped to mitigate the difficulties. In a typical school year, our students had snack time in the classroom. This year we had snack outside on our mask break. What a gift it was to be able to provide every student with a nutritious snack. The students were excited to make their choice and there was no stigma of being the kid that didn't have a snack. Kids can't learn if they're hungry. Thanks for making sure that my students were ready to learn.”

Snack Attack!
Funded Nov 19, 2020You made a team of teachers and our 70 students very happy. This has been a tough year for everyone and we couldn't imagine dealing with our kids being hungry on top of the challenges of social distancing.
It became clear that we had a consistent group of kiddos who were coming to school each day without a snack, along with the occasional students who forgot their snack. We spend a long day masked in the classroom. So when we get to go outside (or when it's too cold, to the school cafeteria), my students are grateful to not only have a snack but to actually have choices - they are very appreciative and so are their teachers. Thank you for making this difficult year a little easier.”

Science Resources for All
Funded Sep 16, 2020As you can imagine, this year has been a challenge for teachers everywhere. One of the most challenging aspects has been lesson planning. In my school we are using a hybrid model. The students are divided into two different cohorts. Cohort A is in school Monday through Friday one week while Cohort B is at home and then they switch off. That means that each week, I have two different sets of lesson plans. When my students are in school, we can use a more traditional education model. However, when they are learning remotely, I need to provide resources that are engaging and accessible through their ChromeBooks. To complicate matters, sometimes the students who would normally be face to face on their week in school, have to isolate and my in person lesson plans have to be converted to remote lesson plans. That's why the Donors Choose grant for at Teachers Pay Teachers gift card really saved the day!
Using my TPT gift card, I was able to purchase lessons that were specifically designed for remote learning. The resources I found were tied to the NGSS standards that I was teaching. They were engaging for the students and while I primarily used them for remote teaching, I also used some of these resources for face to face teaching.
In this year of teaching challenges, it is so nice to feel supported by people who care about education and our children. Thank you so much!”
